Some Useful Metatags used by search engines,

Meta Description Tags

There are so many meta tags out there, How many of you know which Meta Tag is suitable for search engines, Many Newbies are not aware of it,
The description is presented to the user along with the document's title as the result of a search.

Many robots use the first few lines of text as a description if the Description Meta tag is not present.

Usually Meta description tags are used as snippets by search engines when there is no text on the page,

One of the important things that you can do for your website for optimization to search engines is write a good description for your site. If you spend extra time on the description, and tailor it so that it is definitive, concise, and follows all of the guidelines, your website should not have a problem giving a good conversion,

Syntax:
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="your description here.">

A well written Meta Description Tag:

<meta name="DESCRIPTION" content="Branded Shoes online - Buy your Candies Shoes & Sandals from our online shoes selling store - shoespot.com.">

A Keyword rich Meta Description Tag:

Example:
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Search Engine Optimization, Search engine marketing, Search Engine promotion, Search Engine ranking, internet marketing from seoandpromotion your only market place.">

There is nothing wrong in writing a Keyword rich meta description tag but it will be worth if you write one that is good for conversion since it is shown in the SERPs when your site is listed in the search engines,

Meta Keywords Tag:
Space-separated list of key words for indexing your document. Some robots look at keywords in context, so it is best to preserve word order and case. Keywords tag are still used in some search engines,

The keywords tag should contain words or phrases that are relevant to the content of your website, and should stay within the guidelines of the search engines. Some people will either put all of their keywords on each page, or will try to optimize one page for all of the keywords. This is not good practice.

Syntax:
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="your site keywords here ">

A Meta Keywords Tag:

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Search Engine Optimization,search engine marketing,search engine ranking,search engine promotion,Internet Marketing,seo,Search Engine Optimization company">

Robots Meta Tags also read robots.txt resource: -

<META NAME="ROBOTS"

CONTENT="ALL | NONE | NOINDEX | NOFOLLOW | INDEX | FOLLOW | NOARCHIVE">

default = empty = "ALL"
"NONE" = "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"

The filler is a comma separated list of terms: ALL, NONE, INDEX, NOINDEX, FOLLOW, NOFOLLOW.
Discussion: This tag is meant to provide users who cannot control the robots.txt file at their sites. It provides a last chance to keep their content out of search services. It was decided not to add syntax to allow robot specific permissions within the meta-tag. INDEX means that robots are welcome to include this page in search services. FOLLOW means that robots are welcome to follow links from this page to find other pages. So a value of "NOINDEX" allows the subsidiary links to be explored, even though the page is not indexed. A value of "NOFOLLOW" allows the page to be indexed, but no links from the page are explored (this may be useful if the page is a free entry point into pay-per-view content, for example. A value of "NONE" tells the robot to ignore the page.

The NOARCHIVE value tells the robot not the archive the page which helps the bots from not extracting the contents of the page,
